How To Ride The Amtrak Winter Park Express Train

All aboard the Amtrak Winter Park Express — the easiest way to travel between Denver and Winter Park. The ski train is back for the 2024 season, and with low fares, it’s the most economical way to get yourself out of the city, and into the mountains.

Pack your skis as a carry-on for no additional charge. During boarding, skis will be placed in a dedicated baggage storage.

While onboard, you’ll enjoy a trip in Coach class — featuring wide, reclining seats with a big picture window, ample legroom, and no middle seat. Be sure to visit the bi-level Sightseeing Lounge — offering panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains and Moffat Tunnel upstairs and café service with snacks and drinks for sale downstairs.

The Winter Park Express travels between Denver Union Station (DEN) and Winter Park Resort (WPR). To book a trip, use these station codes in the fare finder above (or download the Amtrak app).

The train departs Denver (DEN) at 7am and arrives in Winter Park (WPR) at 9am. The return trip departs Winter Park at 4:30pm and arrives in Denver at 6:40pm.

For trips Monday through Thursday, the California Zephyr — operating daily between Chicago and the San Francisco Bay area via Denver and Salt Lake City — offers service to Winter Park Resort (WPS) via a shuttle connection at Fraser, CO.

*Be sure to enter station code ‘WPS’ if you are booking the shuttle!

Visit the Amtrak Website or download the Amtrak App. Simply select either a one-way or roundtrip ticket, origin and destination, desired travel dates, and proceed to checkout.

Customers in small groups of up to eight can purchase Winter Park Express tickets through the Amtrak Website or the Amtrak App. Customers in groups of 9 – 14 can call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) to make a reservation. Groups of 15 or more — including requests for exclusive car occupancy — can make a group travel request via website and an Amtrak representative will respond back with availability and details.

Winter Park Express travelers can bring two carry-on items and two personal items. Skis or a snowboard can count as one carry-on, and will be stored in a dedicated baggage area aboard the train. There is no extra fee for bringing your skis or snowboard onboard.

*Alcoholic beverages cannot be brought onboard on the Winter Park Express. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks can be purchased onboard in the café.
