Ski Train Sells Out On Solo Trip To Winter Park

ski trainWinter Park Resort recently teamed up with Amtrak to offer a one-day round trip ski-train offer in honor of Winter Park’s 75th anniversary celebrations.

In an unbelievable show of love for what used to be a treasured form of travel to Winter Park for Denver area skiers, all 400 tickets were sold out within 12 hours of going on sale.

For those that haven’t heard of the ski train, this was a long standing service from downtown Denver to Winter Park Resort.    It ran from 1940 until 2009, when it subsided due to increased insurance and service costs.

As Winter Park is one of the few ski resorts in North America that can be viably serviced by train, there was a resounding sigh of sadness the day the ski train ceased to chug its way up to the mountains, and we’re all hoping that this recent show of support will act as a catalyst to reinstating the train at some point in the future.

The gossip circle around Winter Park has always maintained that when the line is completed between Denver International and Downtown Denver, the Winter Park Ski Train will suddenly resurface.   Of course the big wigs at Amtrak deny such stories stating that talks need to happen between Union Pacific, RTD and more…I guess we’ll just have to wait and see (and continue the gossip in the meantime).

For now, will stand by to salute the lucky travelers who made it on to the ski train for its singular journey into Winter Park on March 14th.

For everyone else looking to enjoy a safe voyage to Winter Park this spring, we highly recommend getting behind the wheel of a 4WD or AWD vehicle to navigate the snowy roads to the high country.
