Best Burgers in Winter Park, CO

Winter Park, Colorado’ s Best BurgerBest burger in Winter Park co

It has taken awhile but we have completed the best burger competition in Winter Park, CO.  I have eaten enough burgers to be fairly sure that I will not be ordering a burger in a restaurant for the next couple months.  The positive is I have learned we have some killer burgers here in Winter Park.

The original competition was going to be a contest of the top three recommended by our Winter Park Lodging Company Facebook Fans but there were more than three recommendations.  I tried all five different burgers in addition to the ever present McDonald’s franchise here in Winter Park, CO.

I have seen some burger reviews break down a burger almost scientifically in how they rate the burger.  I was not very scientific at all.  If the meat was flavorful and the bun had a good texture and consistency I pretty much thought the burger good, from there it was deciding what burger had the best flavor combination overall. Burger at Heck's Devil Thumb Ranch

The restaurants that we visited were Deno’s, The Library Grill, Heck’s at Devils Thumb Ranch, Randi’s and Sharky’s.  There was not a bad burger at any one of them.  I am a blue cheese lover and most if the time I ordered some kind blue cheese burger sometimes with bacon.  At Hecks they had a burger with a nice slice of pork belly that can be seen in the pic on the far right. YUM!!!!!

Library Sports bar and grill burgerSo the top burger in Winter Park, Colorado goes to……… drumbeat please……..

Deno’s.  As I said the competition was close but if I had to rate the five burgers I would go in this order:

  1. Deno’s – great meat but it is the bun that really makes this burger.
  2. Heck’s at Devil’s Thumb Ranch – you can not go wrong with putting a slab of pork belly on a burger. They might even be 1a
  3. Randi’s – may have had the best meat but the bun was “stiff”. Still a really good burger and had some awesome onion rings to go with.
  4. The Library –  ordered the Paul Bunyon which is a two patty behemoth that will satisfy any large appetite.  The sweet potato fries sound great but are pretty much mediocre.
  5. Sharky’s –  don’t know why they are last as the burger was really good but a tad small.  They have a homemade bun that is fantastic.  Burger at Sharky's Winter Park, CO

So, there are the best burgers in Winter Park, Colorado from my humble opinion.  You can and will not go wrong with any one of these.  If you are in a rush, or hungover, you can still hit McDonald’s for that Big Mac or Q/Pounder with cheese but you would be much better off hitting one of these local stops here in Winter Park and Fraser.

Here is the original post for the best burger competition in Winter Park , Colorado.

New Restaurant and Consignment Sports Gear Shop in Winter Park, CO

Winter Park Trading Post & Strips and TailsWinter Park Trading Post Strips and Tails

There are always some store shuffling after and before ski season and this year has been no exception.

This summer we saw the opening of The Library and Emilies Wine Bar right on Highway 40 here and they both have been great additions to the restaurant choices in the WP and the Fraser Valley.

Now leading up to the 2011-12 Winter Park/Mary Jane ski season opening the Winter Park Trading Post sports gear consignment and Surf and Turf Restaurant, Strips and Tails will be opening before start of ski season.

The Winter Park Trading Post will be housed in the old Caldwell Banker building right in US Highway 40 across from Fraser Valley Hot Dog.  Strips and Tails is opening in the old Hideaway Bar spot at the end of US 40 across from the Winter Park Lodging Company new offices Pine Tree Plaza.  Steve Bromberg is proprietor of Strips and Tails.  Steve presently operates The Bistro at Iron Horse in the winter and Mackinaw’s Bar and Grill on Lake Granby in the summer.

I don’t have much word on the Winter Park Trading Post but it sounds like it will be like most sports gear consignment stores in ski towns.  One of our favorites is Boomerang Sports in Steamboat Springs, CO.  As I said Winter Park is definitely in need of a consignment sporting goods operation.

So, ski season will be here soon and we are ready for some new shops, eateries and a whole bunch of fresh snow.

Fraser Valley Hot Dog: Best Hot Dog in Winter Park

Winter Park Co Hot Dog

Fraser Valley Hot Dog, Brats and Mixed Grill

On my search for the best burger in the Winter Park, Colorado area I came across absolutely the best hot dogs and brats.  Fraser Valley Chicago Style Dogs serves some great dogs, brats and other tasty grilled vittles.

As I was planning on hitting the last of the candidates for best burger in WP I saw on Fraser Valley Hot Dog’s FaceBook page they were offering a $6.00 Elk Brat.  What a deal and I had it Fozzy Dog style, that is covered with blu cheese, bacon and caramelized onions with a side of chips and a drink.  Yummmm! Great lunch and very easy on the wallet.

We are still working on that best burger contest and hope to have that done by this weekend.  But of you are looking for a killer dog done by a WP local go see Matt at Fraser Dog and get the Fozzy.  You will not be disappointed.

Check out the Yelp Page for FVHD.

FVHD is on off season hours right now so check their FB page or drive by the dogs are worth seeking out.

Tasty New Eateries to Treat Your Taste Buds in Winter Park, CO

We’ve got some new exciting watering holes in town just in time for ski season 2011/2012. Here’s a sneak peak of the new food and dining options awaiting you in Winter Park, Colorado.

The Library:
This new restaurant and bar’s motto is “Don’t Lie To Your Mom, Tell Her You’re at the Library”. Delicious food and microbrews make this a good après-ski spot. We recently tried the Cobb salad and the Paul Bunyan burger. Yum! Located on the main drag in downtown Winter Park near Randi’s and Wells Fargo. Also, it’s right across from the Post Office, how fitting.

Emilie’s:
Located just as you enter downtown Winter Park, where BlueSky shoes used to be, this tapas bar has the town talking. It’s a little pricey, we hear, but we also heard the food is yummy as is the wine. Want something more filling? Go next door to Backcountry Grill for good steaks and atmposphere.

Coming Soon! Elevated Pizza.
Hot off the Press. The folks at Home James Transportation are going to expand their delivery service beyond just people moving. They will be delivering pizza out of their new pizza shop Elevated Pizza in the Alco Shopping Center.

Winter Park Resort First Snow Contest 2011

When will Winter Park, CO Receive the First Measurable Snow for Winter 2011?winter park co when will it snow

It is that time of year again when we are on the snow lookout. We are on our fourth year of the Winter Park,CO First Measurable Snow Contest.  This year looks to be a good year of snow as the La Nina weather pattern is supposed to be hanging on until early in 2012.  And that little La Nina was oh so kind to us last year we are looking for some great snow early this year, knock on wood.

Anyone fortunate enough to live or travel out here to CO during the 2010-11 winter knows that it was the mother of all winters with most Colorado resorts boasting record snow totals. Could this winter be a repeat of the La Nina conditions that brought about last year’s nearly endless winter (we had good a good snowfall in mid-June)?

The NOAA’s current climate models give us a coin flip’s chance at either a repeat La Nina event or the normal ENSO neutral. They aren’t the best odds in the world, but I’ll take them.  Anywho, lets hope that the snow is flying early and often to make this another good winter of skiing.

The first measurable snow in Winter Park, Colorado contest goes like this:

  • Guess the day of the first measurable snow at Winter Park Resort in the comments section below this blog or on the Winter Park Lodging Company Facebook Page
  • Only one guess per person
  • Measurable snow is more than half an inch
  • Prize is dinner for two at Deno’s Mountain Bistro, $100.00 limit
  • Guess must be in two days before actual snow
Last year, 2010, first snow was rather late with an October 12th blizzard.  2009 brought us first snow on September 21st and 2008 was early with a September 10th date.  Last year I predicted September 15th and was off by almost a month.
So everyone put your Winter Park Resort Trail-maps in the freezer for good luck (and to make the snow gods happy) and get your snow dance on.  I will start things off with the fist snow prediction for ski season 2011/2012.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Deno’s has some fun happenings going on this summer with a great happy hour and a cruiser bike night with a “you flip for a drink”.

Winter Park Cruiser Rides are every Tuesday starting at Deno’s Mountain Bistro at 6pm. Introducing flip night. $10 wrist band gets your specials at participating businesses all summer long. (proceeds from wrist bands goes to the Grand Foundation)

New Winter Park, CO Restaurants, Bars and Brewpubs

tapas winter park coloradoWine Bar and Brew Pub to Open on US40

The restaurant world is doing its usual changes here on Winter Park this mud season.  We have some restaurants moving, some new ones coming in, some remodeling and some expanding.  It all means for a busy summer of construction and restaurant openings and movings.sushi winter park co

Deno’s Mountain Bistro is now open after their remodel. The Winter Park Sushi Bar has moved to their new location and re-opened.  The Sushi Bar is in the space previously housing the Cosmic Dog burrito shop next to Rudi’s Deli.  Both Deno’s and the Sushi Bar look great and the upgrades should work well for both of them.

Winter Park CO steakhouseNext we have Emilie’s Wine and Tapas Bar opening next to the BackCountry Grill by the owners of the Backcountry Grill. Locally owned and operated, Emilie’s Restaurant is Winter Park’s only wine and tapas bar! Offering a wide array of tapas (Spanish-style plates) Emilie’s knows how to keep it simple: good food, good wine, affordable prices.  Look for Emilie’s to open Memorial Day weekend 2011.

Lastly we have a new Brew Pub and Sports Bar opening in downtown Winter Park.   Literature & Libations, LLC d.b.a. The Library Sports Grill and Brewery to be located at 78491 US Highway 40, Winter Park, CO 80482 had a liquor

winter park co brewery pub

hearing May 17th and from what I can discern they were awarded a liquor license.  The Literature and Libations group are an outfit out of Laramie, Wyoming and are planning a brewery and sports bar in the old Wild Creek space. Rumor around town is they will be opening sometime around June 24th.  The Library specializes in 8 House Brews that vary from a Kolsch to a Stout. Stop in for a pint (or five)!

Lots of moving and shaking in the restaurant word in Winter Park, CO and it looks as we will have to check out all the new great food and drink.  We will report back on what we thought of all the new fare.

Grand Lake Lodge Set to Open Under New Owners

New owners Grand Lake LodgeFirst Season New Owners Grand Lake Lodge

Colorado’s Favorite Front Porch is set to open under new owners full time June 6th, 2011.  Last summer the Lodge opened for a short time with limited food and hours as a kind of audition for the new owners.  This season will see the Grand Lake Lodge up and running at full steam serving breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as getting back into the wedding business.

GLL is now owned by an investor group out of South Dakota and managed by Regency Hotel Management.  The full restaurant menu has not come out yet but that should be available in the next few weeks.

The new Grand Lake Lodge website (partially completed) can be found at http://grandlakelodge.rtrk.com/

If you have never been out to the Lodge, it is quite a treat.  Some of the best views in all of Colorado.  The Lodge sits above the town of Grand Lake which is on the banks of Colorado’s largest natural lake.  Grand Lake has been a summer playground for some of Colorado’s most wealthy and famous residents.  The entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park sits just outside Grand Lake Lodge’s entrance.  If are looking to explore the high country or just get away, there is not a cooler place than the Lodge.

Word on the street is there will not be too many changes coming to GLL at least this year.  The Lodge will be open from July 10, 2011 and will close September 11, 2011.  Wouldn’t it be really nice of the new owners could keep GLL open in winter months also?  That may be too tall an order though.  It is very nice to see Grand Lake Lodge reopening and we wish them the best!

Winter Park Restaurant Review – Back Country Grill

Winter Park CO steakhouseBack Country Grill – Winter Park, Colorado

We had a chance to hit the town, sans the two rabble rousing twins, this weekend and our dinner plans brought us to The Back Country Grill for a night out with WP locals and some visitors from Nashville, TN.  We hadn’t been to BCG for over a year and it was good to see how things have been going for them since the change in ownership before this ski season.  Brad and Emily took over from original owner Bob this past October.

We hit BCG about 7PM and it was busy busy as all of Winter Park was jumpin’ with a Saturday night full of Spring breakers.  We had a table waiting so we were able to sit down right away and enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail. We had some grilled scallops and a quirky nacho dish for appetizers.  Scallops were great but the nachos as I said were a little odd.

For dinner the table ordered a steak salad, mahi fish special, elk medallions, 2 Cowboy Cut Rib-eyes.  The steaks were big, juicy and delicious and the other foods looked great and there were only compliments for the food.  We enjoyed a couple of bottles of wine with dinner and the wine list was value priced and quality was good.  Service was a tad slow, but hey it was one of the busiest nights this ski season in Winter Park.

Back Country Grill did not disappoint and we had a fine evening out on the town.  Brad and Emily are opening a wine and tapas bar next door to BCG called Emelie’s, which will be a great addition to bar/restaurant scene here in Winter Park, Colorado.  Overall, we had a great night and we would recommend Back Country Grill for a nice night out on the town with a perfect steak and bottle of wine.

Lime in Winter Park Village, Colorado

Winter Park Resort restaurantsWinter Park Resort Happy Hour

Looking for a great deal on some eats and drinks at Winter Park?  Lime has unleashed a killer deal for happy hour and take out burritos and tacos. Check out the happy hour deals there below.  The happy hour food deals are also nicely priced and very tasty.

Drink and food deals winter park resort

Lime is alo offering to-go tacos and burritos for $5.  Two tacos or a burrito with shredded chicken, beef or pulled carnitas for only five George Washingtons, not too bad of a deal.

Lime is in the Winter Park Village and can be contacted at:

135 Parry Peak Way
Winter Park, CO 80482

(970) 726-5463

www.eatatlime.com

Head over to Lime for some decent deals during happy hour and some great priced tacos and burritos.  If you check out their Yelp page you will find they have been getting some terrible reviews.  We have eaten at Lime – Winter Park probably ten time the last couple of years and some of the complaints on Yelp are definitely  valid.  But, I do think Lime has tried to correct most of their troubles.  The staff at times can seem uninterested in any kind of service and the food and drink can be overpriced.  The restaurant is at the base of a ski resort so some of the high priced items can be expected.   The last couple of times we have gone to Lime the food quality has also  definitely improved.

With the new happy hour food and drink specials Lime should be turning a corner and should be a good destination for some good drinks and eats after a day at Winter Park skiing and boarding.
