Winter Park, CO and Mary Jane Opening Day Ski Season 2011

Summer is still upon us here in Winter Park, but the bite of fall can and already has been felt. There are even some clumps of aspen trees that are already changing to yellow. And what does all this mean? It is time to get ready for the opening of Winter Park and Mary Jane.

This year opening day is Wednesday, November 16th 2011 at 9am. Let the countdown begin! Last year we had an incredible opening with 7 inches of snow the night before opening and that led the way with a great snow season all year long. Let us rejoice in La Nina. The La Nina weather is supposed to stay with us through early winter and into the new year and we can only hope that it brings us the snow of last year. It looks like we may have an ENSO Neutral, or weak La Nina in store for the fall/ winter period.

So as of today we have 97 days until the slopes of Winter Park are open for our skiing pleasure. In that time we will get to see the newest Warren Miller ski movie, hit up Sniagrab for the some new ski schwag and hit the gym for the preseason ski conditioning classes. Don’t forget to get you Winter Park/Mary Jane season ski pass before it is too late, 97 days we will be gone before you know it.

Wednesday, November 16th 2011 is the opening day for Winter Park Resort.

Early Season Colorado Skiing

Opening Day Copper Mountain Resort

We had a chance to visit one of our favorite ski resorts besides Winter Park last Friday and hit Copper Mountain’s opening day. Snow conditions were ok with some great snow coverage but a bit on the bullet proof side. There was one run open and one lift that was accessible to the public and one lift open for ski race training. The snow was not perfect but the temperatures were May like and in the 40′s.

The conditions this year have been great for early season skiing. Loveland last week had a 20 inch mid mountian depth and three lifts running with five runs and two of those were bump runs. All this snow in the first week of November is hopefully an omen of great snow year.

Today Winter Park is getting hit with a good sized weather front and the snow is dumping. The Winter Park forecast calls for snow off and on all week long. Opening day is a week away, next Wednesday November 17th. The La Niña weather pattern seems to be holding and is strong this year so we should be in for a great snow year (knock on wood).

Early season is a great time to ski in Colorado and specifically WInter Park as there are great deals on almost everthing. From lift tickets to lodging and ski rentals to food and drinks deals can be had in November and early December. Check out the Winter Park Lodging Company deals page.

Get a jump on this ski season and get out early to enjoy some great snow conditions this year.

Winter Park Resort First Week of Skiing

We got to get out to the slopes yesterday, Friday the 20th of November, and made some turns at what is open so far at Winter Park Resort. We also got to sport our new, oh so fancy Winter Park Lodging Company jackets. We had a fun time as it gets you pretty excited to strap the skis back on make some first week of skiing Winter Park Colorado

turns on the slopes after five months off. There were three lifts open and a few runs to get warmed up for the season. It is official now the Resort is open and the ski season is on. How many days will you get in this year? Don’t make this another year of – “I should have gotten more skiing in”. Can you get 40 days of skiing in? or will it be 50 or even 60? Maybe you are marathoner and will hit 100?

The jackets are just spectacular, No? Red for the males and blue for the females, Winter Park Lodging Company employees will be the envy of all skiing on Winter Park Mountain. So look for Chris, Sarah, Rachel, Amy, Sam and Christina out on the slopes and say hello. Oh Ya lets not forget Val who will be making a return from Spain to join us for the ski season.

So here is to Winter Park Resort in it’s platinum, 70th, year and Winter Park Lodging Company with new jackets and the start our fifth year.
