Fall Colors in Winter Park, CO

Winter Park Resort Fall ColorsWinter Park Resort changing of the colors

The fall colors have arrived here in Winter Park in full force.  Summer has limped away and fall arrived and is hopefully here to stay for at-least a couple of weeks.  It is the time to get out and see the beauty of Colorado.  There are plenty of bike rides, hikes and drives to check out all that this part of the Colorado Rockies have to offer.  Check out the picture to the left from up around Solvista.  We have been experiencing some fantastic weather and the golds and reds are out.  From mid-September to October 1st is the prime fall color viewing time here in WP.

From the Front Range here is a great fall color viewing drive from the Boulder/Denver area:

Trail Ridge Road (US 34) through Rocky Mountain National Park – Take the Boulder Turnpike (US 36) west to Rocky Mountain National Park via Estes Park. Once in the park, drive Trail Ridge Road (the highest paved through highway in the US) and enjoy the breath-taking scenery. The weather can change quickly in the park so be sure and get the latest forecast from your 24/7 Weather Center. Trail Ridge Road peaks at 12,183 feet in elevation. Just west of the high point is Fall River Pass, elevation 11,796 feet, and the Alpine Visitor Center. Exit the west side of the park and continue on US 34 down into Grand Lake. From there, take US 40 east through Fraser and Winter Park, eventually meeting back up with I-70 at Empire.

This is a great drive with options to stop in Estes Park, Grand Lake and Winter Park.  Make a two day trip out of it and stay with Winter Park Lodging Company for a fun time playing hard and resting easy.  Check out some of the new restaurants in Winter Park, CO.

Fall is here and the colors are unbelievable, get out and take a look.

Labor Day at Winter Park Resort, Colorado

Winter Park, CO Labor DayWinter Park Colorado Labor Day

Labor Day brings about a lot of transition here in Winter Park.  It is also a great weekend to celebrate the end of summer or as has been the usual case the middle of fall.

Labor Day is September 5th this year and there has already been some clumps of aspen turning yellow as of the second week of August so expect the colors to be blazing around Labor Day in Winter Park.  As the saying goes, “All good things must come to an end,” and the phenomenal summer season we’ve been having up at Winter Park Resort is no exception. Labor Day marks the end of summer weekday operations at the resort.  Trestle Bike Park and the other base attraction will be open on weekends through September 25th.

The weather here in Winter Park has not turned yet but there is definitely a fall feel in the air each morning.  It is perfect weather in my opinion with the days in the 70′s a night time is cool enough for a fleece or light jacket. This is the best time of the year for mountain biking in Winter Par and the trail are in terrific shape.

There are also a lots to do other than the Winter Park Resort activities.  Check out Devils Thumb Ranch Labor Day celebration:

$29 All-You-Can-Eat Chef Prepared BBQ
Kids (12 & under) Half-Price
$3 Drafts
$3 Trinity Oaks Wines
$3 House-made Infusion Martinis

Enjoy yard games, an animal petting zoo, live music by Rob Drabkin.

Choose from two-for-one activities such as guided hikes, a mountain bike ride, fly casting lessons, archery, or Cowpoke Camp for the kids.

Winter Park Colorado in October

Mtn Biking Winter Park Oct 7Mountain Biking Under the Snowy Peaks

What a crazy place for weather!  On Monday we received 5 inches of snow.  Tuesday it pretty much all melted down here in the valley.  And Wednesday it hits 60 degrees and is beautiful.  We went on our family biking expedition out in Pole Creek today and the views were unbelievable.  All the peaks around us were covered in snow and the sun was shining.  All this in a light jacket and shorts.

Check out the views in the photo to the left.  Crazy beautiful up here this time of year.  The aspen have almost all changed and there are not many people in town and the mountain biking is fantastic.  Still warm enough that Nicholas & Willem, the twins, ride in the Burley as happy as can be.  Only time they complain is when dad doesn’t go fast enough up the hills and they chant “all done, all done, all done”.

Need a getaway in October?  There is not prettier more relaxing place in Colorado!

Blues Show | Larry Garner | Oct. 3 in Winter Park

larry garnerJust because the snow is falling and the resort hasn’t opened yet, doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to do in the Valley.  Come over the hill to Smokin’ Moe’s in Winter Park on October 3rd for a down home Louisiana blues show with legendary Larry Garner.  Show starts at 9pm, with a $10 cover. Call Moe’s for more information at 970 726 4600.  Now’s a great time to check out the foliage too, it’s just beautiful up here right now.

Kent Keller Climbs All 54 14′ers in Colorado

Congratulations to Kent Keller of Estes Park, CO!! At age 72, he has summited all 54 of Colorado’s 14,000 foot mountains.  He climbed his first when he was only 13, and now 59 years later he has checked them all off his list.  If you would like to get started on your own list of 14′ers, why not try Long’s Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. The park is only about 45 minutes from Winter Park. It is a good “starter climb” as it has good road access, and is a non-technical climb. You’ll want to start before dawn, since it is a long climb, 7.5 miles to the summit.  Best to get up here soon, as the weather is quickly turning to winter, especially at high altitudes. Winter Park Lodging Company will find a great condo for you relax in after your adventure to the top of the world.

Winter Park Colorado in September | Changing of the Colors

Winter Park Colorado September

Winter Park in September

It is getting to be Fall up here in Winter Park, Colorado.  September is my favorite month with the changing of the colors and the cool, crisp mornings and evenings.  It doesn’t get any better for scenery and it is the best time of year for mountain biking.

A perfect day is waking up to a nice hot cup of coffee to be enjoyed on the deck followed by fresh pancakes and eggs.  Off to mountain biking up behind Rendezvous for a few hours and then a good soak in a pool or hot tub.  Evening comes around and it’s a great dinner at Tabernash Tavern or the Cheeky Monk followed with a bottle of good wine sitting around the fire on the patio.

It is the time for all the aspens to change colors also.  The last couple of weekends are when we get the most colors from the aspen.  Nothing more fun than a drive up to Grand Lake a trip through Rocky Mountain National Park to see the changing of the colors.
