High-Note Thursday Music at Hideaway ParkHigh Note Thursday Winter Park CO

Summer has arrived and the High-Note Thursday music series in Hideaway Park is ready for some outdoor sounds under the peaks.  This coming week we have Nick Moss and Friends on June 23rd.  The High-Note Music Series is a free event put on by the Winter Park/Fraser Chamber of Commerce that is a great time for locals and guests alike.  Chairs and music are provided with food and beverages allowed.  So pack up a picnic, bottle of wine or two and head out to Hideaway Parkfor some great tunes with friends.  There is not a cheaper, better time to be had here in Winter Park.

Here is the rest of the lineup for Thursday Music in the Park:

June 30:  Opie Gone Bad

July 7:  Kory Brunson Band

July 14:  Red June

July 21: Jack Hadley Band

July 28:  Andy Hackbarth Band (special performance by Due West)

August 4:  Slopeside

August 11:  Hunker Down

On July 14th our friends from North Carolina, Red June, will be playing in Hideaway Park and I recommend you come and see one of the hottest Americana Acoustic bands in the country.  Here is what one music critic is saying about Red June:

“I've listened to and reviewed a lot of new releases during the past year and I have to put Red June’s right at the top. I'm not kidding. At the top. This is absolutely the best new music I've heard in many a moon." -David Belknap, Peterborough Folk Music Society

The Red June sound is as versatile and original as the musicians themselves; they touch on bluegrass, roots rock, and traditional country music with powerful harmonies, innovative songwriting and expert musicianship. Collectively, Will Straughan, Natalya Weinstein and John Cloyd Miller have shared the stage with countless bluegrass and Americana greats such as James Taylor, Sam Bush, Joe Craven, Jim Lauderdale, Del McCoury, Alice Gerrard, Jim Shumate and B.B. King and have performed at festivals across the country including RockyGrass, Grey Fox, Merlefest, Grand Targhee, MagnoliaFest and Shakori Hills.

Make a plan and come out to hear some great music up here high in the Rocky Mountains.  All the bands are great but you should not miss Red June.

Winter Park Music Festival – Free!

Winter Park CO free summer music festivalRock Fest at Winter Park, CO

The Winter Park Music Festival is this weekend Saturday August 7th at Hideaway Park.  The festival is featuring Night Ranger, Pat Travers and The Groove Hogs. Yes, a little bit nostalgic but the show is free and who can’t sin along with “sister Christian now the time has come”. Whew, brings me right back to high school in 1984.

The weather in Winter Park is just about perfect right now and you can’t beat live music under the mountain tops listening to some rockin’ tunes.

Come on up and enjoy a day of Music, Food, Beer Pavilion, Vendors and Fun.  103.5 The Fox brings a GREAT line-up of music and fun.  Gates and Vendors open at 10 am for this FREE EVENT!

• Access to Chair Seating close to the stage
• 2 FREE Beverages
• A chance to win tickets to the Backstage Meet and Greet Party
• A FREE Festival T-Shirt

Again headlining  is Night Ranger:

Night Ranger left an indelible mark with a string of best-selling albums that sold more than 16 million copies worldwide. The band’s popularity was fueled by an impressive string of instantly recognizable hit singles and signature album tracks, including “Sister Christian,” “(You Can Still) Rock In America,” “When You Close Your Eyes,” “Sentimental Street,” “Goodbye” and “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me.” Harnessing the frenetic drive of heavy metal to hook-laden rock songs, throwing in a stunning twin lead guitar team, and melodious, radio-friendly power ballads, Night Ranger inspired new descriptive phrases such as “melodic metal” and “metal power pop”. They became the standard-bearer of a new sound.

Free music, beer, all in the mountains. Sounds like a great weekend.

Highlights from the Blues from the Top Festival in Winter Park

JP Soars at Winter Park Blues from the Top Music Festival

JP Soars and his handmade guitar

It turned out to be another perfect weekend of beautiful weather and outstanding blues performances for the eighth annual Blues from the Top festival in Winter Park, Colorado.  This weekend is my personal favorite of all Winter Park music festivals because: 1) it kicks off the summer in Winter Park; and 2) you can dance to the blues music right in front of the stage. You must check it out sometime if you haven’t yet.

The festivities started on Friday night with Curtis Salgado followed by Andy Irvine’s Blues Collective at Music at the Mall at Cooper Creek Square, then moved over to Smokin’ Moes for the official Pre-Festival Jam with jam performances by the festival’s performers.   The dance floor at Smokin’ Moes was packed as usual and the musicians were clearly having as much fun as we were!

I missed the show on Saturday, but the highlight (from what I’ve heard) was the Walter Trout performance preceded by the hail strorm that swiftly cleared the park out for about 10 minutes. The cooler air after the storm was welcomed by my festival-goer friends, who came back to enjoy Walter and his band close out Saturday’s show.

Sunday’s show started out with a mimosa from one of the vendors, then my freinds and I settled in our campchairs to take in some sun and music. It wasn’t long though before we were up dancing to the tunes.  We had Curtis Salgado, Nick Moss and the Fliptops, Mike Zito, Theresa James, JP Soars and Trampled Under Foot.  JP Soars was especially entertaining with his handmade guitar (pictured). His high energy blues, paired with a deep soulful voice, was definitely a lot of fun to dance to.

There were a lot of vendors to peruse between acts, plus good food like BBQ, Fried Catfish and Mexican. I loved the authentic $3 tamale and the mint chocolate chip ice cream for desert.  The continual lathering of sunscreen was necessary with all the wonderfully bright sunshine, with no afternoon thunderstorm or hardly a cloud in sight.  The Australian hat vendor sure must have made a killing, although be warned, he doesn’t take bargaining jokes lightly.

Ah, just another fun summer weekend in Winter Park, with plenty more to come. Next up is the Free Hi Country Music Festival, the Winter Park Jazz Festival, the Free Fox Classic Rock Festival and the Crankworx Colorado Mountain Bike Festival. The summer was just kicked off wonderfully by the Blues from the Top Music Fest.

Winter Park, CO Free Music Thursdays

Free music Colorado MountainsFree Colorado Live Music

Winter Park, CO will be hosting free Music Thursdays in Hideaway Park in downtown Winter Park.  These are completely free shows and are just a blast to attend.

The shows start at 6PM and go till around 8PM and there are usually good crowds and lawn chairs are provided by The Winter Park Chamber of Commerce.  It is always fun to pack a picnic dinner and some adult beverages and here a little live music in one of the most s[spectacular settings that you will ever hear live music. These shows are very kid and dog friendly and are well attended by both locals and visitors alike.

This year there are some pretty well known names on lineup that includes Opie Gone Bad and Hunker Down, a Winter Park favorite.  The first show is June 24th and last is August 12th.

Here is the lineup and dates:

June 24: Samantha Fish
July 1: Boa & The Constrictors
July 8: Opie Gone Bad
July 15: Wendy Woo
July 22: Quemando Band
July 29: Rob Drabkin
Aug 5: Soul School
Aug 12: Hunker Down

Again the performances take place in Hideaway Park right on US Highway 40 in town.  Look for the big moose on the north side of US 40 and take a right.  The park on your left.  Pack a picnic , the kids, some drinks and head out for some music and a great friendly atmosphere.

The last two years the weather has been great with mostly sunny skies and no wind.  It does get a little chilly as the sun sets so be sure to bring a jacket if you are planning on staying past dark.

Come up and make a weekend out of the show with some great biking at Trestle Bike Park on Friday and maybe a hike or Colorado mountain golf on Saturday and then some mountain biking on Sunday.

Winter Park, Colorado Beer Festival

Colorado mountain beer festivalsColorado Mountain Beer Festival

The first annual Winter Park, CO beer festival has been announced and will be taking place in Hideaway Park in downtown Winter Park, Colo on Saturday August 14, 2010.  This is Winter Parks first foray into the beer festival world but we are thinking that the Winter Park Beer Festival will be bigger and badder than the Great American Beer Festival in no time.

The Winter Park Beer Festival will be a celebration of beer, music and mountains, can you have any of these without the others?, in the beautiful environs of Winter Park, CO.  There will be over 25 breweries represented doing beer tastings and selling merchandise with local and national bands to keep all entertained.  There will also be vendors in Hideaway Park selling all that you will need to make this a fun and friendly day of beer drinking.  We are hoping that the three young ladies to the left will be attending to help peddle some of the suds.

Breweries that can be expected to be attending, but in no way guaranteed to be, include New Belgium Brewery, Odell’s Brewery, Coors, Budweiser, Great Divide Brewery, Oscar Blues Brewery, Sierra Nevada Brewery, Left Hand Brewery, Grand Lake Brewery, Deschutes Brewing and Flying Dog Brewery.  There should be some great beers by some of the best brewers in the nation.

As for music, the lineup should be fun with lots of good beer drinking tunes.  Here is who will be playing:

JJ Grey and MOFRO

“intriguing and fortuitous… Grey’s a songwriter with a sharp wit and a knack for skewering the hypocrites, jive politicians and carpetbaggers who litter the landscape. The MOFRO vibe travels freely among swamp funk, blues, rock and soul, and does so with a certain down-and-dirty swagger that’s as real as it is appealing.”

Filthy Children

This funk/jazz/rock septet serves up a funkinetic frenzy of fresh, original, mind moving music; reminiscent of such groove giants as Soulive, Greyboy Allstars, John Scofield, and Deep Banana Blackout. Filthy Children deliver action packed funk that’s sure to be “a big fat kick in the groove”

Cowboy Dave

Hillbilly yuckster by day, Saturday-morning-cartoon hero by night, Cowboy Dave and his band of honky-tonk all-stars are poised to put the western back in country and western. Known to many as the deadpanned FortyTwenty frontman and fiddle player, Cowboy Dave Wilson has spent the better part of this decade honing his craft throughout the honky-tonks of the Midwest and South.

Sounds like some good grooves to get a good beer drink going up in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.  This festival being on a Saturday lets you come up and enjoy a Free Ride Friday in Trestle Bike Park then the beer festival on Saturday and maybe some cross country/ single track mountain biking on Sunday before you return home.

I forgot to mention that the Winter Park Beer Festival benefits a truly worthy cause in the National Sports Center for the Disabled.  I do not know of a better cause to give to and to do it all by drinking some beer and listening to some music in the Colorado mountains, now that is one heck of a weekend.

So come on out and celebrate summer with some beer and music!
