Fall Colors in Winter Park, CO

Winter Park Resort Fall ColorsWinter Park Resort changing of the colors

The fall colors have arrived here in Winter Park in full force.  Summer has limped away and fall arrived and is hopefully here to stay for at-least a couple of weeks.  It is the time to get out and see the beauty of Colorado.  There are plenty of bike rides, hikes and drives to check out all that this part of the Colorado Rockies have to offer.  Check out the picture to the left from up around Solvista.  We have been experiencing some fantastic weather and the golds and reds are out.  From mid-September to October 1st is the prime fall color viewing time here in WP.

From the Front Range here is a great fall color viewing drive from the Boulder/Denver area:

Trail Ridge Road (US 34) through Rocky Mountain National Park – Take the Boulder Turnpike (US 36) west to Rocky Mountain National Park via Estes Park. Once in the park, drive Trail Ridge Road (the highest paved through highway in the US) and enjoy the breath-taking scenery. The weather can change quickly in the park so be sure and get the latest forecast from your 24/7 Weather Center. Trail Ridge Road peaks at 12,183 feet in elevation. Just west of the high point is Fall River Pass, elevation 11,796 feet, and the Alpine Visitor Center. Exit the west side of the park and continue on US 34 down into Grand Lake. From there, take US 40 east through Fraser and Winter Park, eventually meeting back up with I-70 at Empire.

This is a great drive with options to stop in Estes Park, Grand Lake and Winter Park.  Make a two day trip out of it and stay with Winter Park Lodging Company for a fun time playing hard and resting easy.  Check out some of the new restaurants in Winter Park, CO.

Fall is here and the colors are unbelievable, get out and take a look.

Moose Class in Winter Park, CO

My sister Anne-Marie and her husband Larry  celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary with a ‘Moose Class’ through Ecoadventures, using room 2419 at the Zephyr as their home base. Anne took the class for credit for her career as a teacher, Larry opted for non-credit (wouldn’t do him much good as a flight simulator tech).

Using Zephyr Mountain Lodge 2419 as a base of operation was far superior to tent camping in the rain, which is what many of the class participants were doing. While others were slogging around their tents, Anne and Larry were high and dry, enjoying a glass of wine from their balcony.

The moose class taught reams of minutiae about moose and the class was successful in spotting 5 moose. Also, thanks to the tip from the maintenance man with whom Anne and Larry shared an elevator, Anne and Larry kept their eyes open at the base of Berthoud Pass and spotted 2 more moose on the way home!

All in all, a very memorable 27th wedding anniversary.

Anne and Larry say thanks to Chris and Sarah at Winter Park Lodging Company.

The only regret was not being able to stick around for the CrankWorx bike extravaganza at Winter Park Base that weekend.

Come on up to Winter Park Resort and check out the moose.  Late summer and fall are the best times to see the moose.  In Rendezvous sub-division moose sighting are very very common and one big bull moose over there has been affectionately named Freddy the moose.

Winter Park Colorado September

Winter Park in September

It is getting to be Fall up here in Winter Park, Colorado.  September is my favorite month with the changing of the colors and the cool, crisp mornings and evenings.  It doesn’t get any better for scenery and it is the best time of year for mountain biking.

A perfect day is waking up to a nice hot cup of coffee to be enjoyed on the deck followed by fresh pancakes and eggs.  Off to mountain biking up behind Rendezvous for a few hours and then a good soak in a pool or hot tub.  Evening comes around and it’s a great dinner at Tabernash Tavern or the Cheeky Monk followed with a bottle of good wine sitting around the fire on the patio.

It is the time for all the aspens to change colors also.  The last couple of weekends are when we get the most colors from the aspen.  Nothing more fun than a drive up to Grand Lake a trip through Rocky Mountain National Park to see the changing of the colors.
