Cheeky Monk in The Village at Winter Park

Cheeky Monk's bar

Cheeky Monk's bar

Here’s your first glimpse at the newly opened Cheeky Monk in the Village at Winter Park.  We tried it out last week and loved it.
Here were our favorite things about the look of the place:
- The cathedral ceilings make it feel huge- Great views of the Continental Divide
- Large outdoor porch overlooking the ice skating rink (heated floor!)
- Big chandeliers
Here are our favorite things about the food/drinks:
- Great list of beers (mention “Winter Park Lodging By Owner” and get a free Bruxelles draft – $5.25 value!) and they each come in their own glass (see photo below)
- Food is great. We had the fries (see photo below). Actually, we had 3 orders of fries they were so good. They are the salty skinny kind and come with a yummy white sauce for dipping (as well as ketchup).
We also had muscles – I usually think they taste fishy but these were very good

They have their full menu now and we’ll have to hit it again for dinner to give more info on what’s good, but so far, we found nothing we didn’t like.
Oh, and the owners personally came out and met us as did the manager. Energetic,  friendly folks.
And, they answered my question…there is NO skiing in Belgium so we can’t really say it looks like a “Belgium ski lodge” but if there were, this is what it would look like.

Winter Park Alpenglow – what is it?

Alpenglow at Winter Park

Alpenglow at Winter Park

There are a lot of local businesses and publications around here with “Alpenglow” in the name.  I didn’t really know exactly what they meant until I moved here and saw the evening sky.  The photo to the left pretty much sums it up.

For the scientist, you can read the details at wikipedia, but the general rule is this:

Although the term may be loosely applied to any sunrise or sunset light seen on the mountains, true alpenglow is not direct sunlight and is only observed after sunset or before sunrise.

Come on up and get a glimpse. And your 4th night is free.

Our Top Ten Winter Park Restaurants

We here at Winter Park Lodging by Owner, most of us being former restaurant/bar owners or employees and such, have decided to come up with our very own top ten ten list of restaurants for the Fraser Valley area.  With a couple of restaurants opening in the new Winter Park Village we know competition for the dining dollar is only going to get more fierce up here in WP.  So here goes our list in no particular order.  We don’t want to offend any of our fellow citizens!

  1. tabernash-tavernTabernash Tavern - upscale comfort food with quality that you can’t believe here in Tabernash.  Great atmosphere also.  It has taken over from Devil’s Thumb Ranch as our upscale favorite!  Cheaper too!!
  2. hernandos-pizza-pubHernando’s Pizza - an old time favorite that just seems to keep getting it right.  They have the all time best Hawiian Pizza with sliced almonds.
  3. Mirasol Cantina - Great margaritas and a dynamite salsa bar.  Try the lamb tacos, they are fantastic!
  4. Sushi Bar - Great sushi in the mountains and the best staff around.  Say hey to Jill our favorite bartender.  She can whip up a mean Maker’s Mark Manhattan.
  5. winter-park-pubThe Winter Park Pub  - Sometimes you need to get down and dirty with some live music and draft beer.  If it was an epic day on the slopes don’t forget the Jager.  Give Jeff, the owner, a holler tell him his WPLBO neighbors sent you over.
  6. Azteca Mexican Restaurant  – Family style mexican with good margaritas.  They have a nice patio for the summer and great salsa.
  7. Rudi’s Deli - Best sandwiches in Winter Park and Tim the owner is a great guy.  Talk a little politics with Tim as you chow down your “Holiday on a bun” – my favorite.
  8. fontenots-winter-parkFontenot’s – A little cajun up in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.  Great gumbo and jambalaya and they put up with our food throwing twins!
  9. Lime – They were one of our competitors in Denver but now I’m outta that biz we can recommend them freely.  Brand new in the Winter Park Village but the three times we’ve been there food and margs have been great.  They do need to figure out their heat/cold issues with the front door though.
  10. The Cheeky Monk  - They opened Feb 28th and we tried it out already. AWESOME! Big red walls with vaulted ceilings and Belgium-like chandeliers, it really does feel like a Belgium ski lodge. Hang on, is there skiing in Belgium?  Anyway, it’s worth going and mention Winter Park Lodging By Owner.  You get a free Blanche De Bruxelles draft with any purchase when you mention our name.

Mardi Gras at Winter Park. Show us your ??? to get some beads!

Mardi Gras is coming to Winter Park on February 24th!!  Beads, beads, beads everywhere, around necks, in trees, even on dogs. On the hill, you’ll most likely run into some friendly folks from New Orleans who are on a Winter Park Ski Vacation to escape the craziness at home.

Come to the  big party downtown at Cooper Creek Square. The celebration begins at 6:30pm and will feature jugglers, fire throwers, and acrobats. Drink and dinner specials will be served at the Cooper Creek restaurants. Be sure to have an official Mardi Gras beverage, a Hurricane made with Southern Comfort. Smokin’ Moe’s and the Grand County Blues Society will host Trampled Under Foot at 9pm.

Give us a call to make your last minute Mardi Gras reservation. We still have some fantastic Winter Park properties for you to choose from. Come and earn your beads in Winter Park!  We want to party with you!
