Best Patio Deck to Have a Beer in Winter Park, Colorado

Springtime under the colorado rockies on the patioEnjoy a Beer on the Patio in Winter Park, CO

It is that time of year here in the Colorado mountains to put the Sorrels away and break out the flip-flops, Tevas and Chacos and head out for an afternoon of cold suds on the patio decks.

We have plenty of bars here in Winter Park and almost all of them have some king of patio seating.  Where to go though for the coldest beer, the perfect rays and patrons that will give up the makeup before the beer (the Miller add to the left is just a hoot). What happens when it comes down to beer or skiing, now there is a conundrum!

Anywho, here is my list of five best decks to have a beer in Winter Park, Colorado (in no particular order):

  1. The Cheeky Monk – located in the Winter Park Village and featuring all European/Belgium beers on draft, this a great place to people watch after skiing.  Great staff, great beer and a great deck to have a beer.
  2. Deno’s Mountain Bistro – in the the town of Winter Park right on US 40 and not the biggest deck but it does have history and is a great place to see the locals and swill a beer.  The building used to be the Old Swiss House from long ago.  Teddy, the owner, says this is not not only a beer swillin’ deck but a wine swillin’ one too.
  3. The Sushi Bar – another deck right on US 40 but at the north end of town. A great deck! And where else in WP can you have a saki-bomber under the blue sky? Offering select $1.50 bottles of beer currently.
  4. Doc’s Roadhouse – located at the base of WP Resort in the Zephyr building.  There is an upstairs and downstairs patio.  Operated by Intrawest with a great location and it’s a great place to end a day of skiing/mountain biking/ playing around. Great people watching and an after work hang-out for Winter Park Ski Patrolers.
  5. The Club Car – located at the Mary Jane base and open only during ski season. Probably the best place to have a beer at the Winter Park Resort.  People watching is great and has a very party like atmosphere when the sun is shining, the sky is blue and the snow is fresh.

So there you have my picks for the best place to have a barley pop on a deck in the Winter Park area.  Remember it is beer before makeup and skiing before beer!

Hot Sulphur Springs, CO. Mineral Baths

Mineral baths near Winter Park ColoradoMineral Baths Near Winter Park Colorado

Hot Sulphur Springs, CO is not the most original name out there but a telling name it is.  Hot Sulpher has been relaxing travelers for many, many years from as long back as the Ute Indians were running things up here in this part of Grand County.

The first inhabitants of the springs were the Ute Indians who used the hot springs for many years. The Utes believed in the healing qualities of the waters and referred to them as “big medicine” and “magic waters”, and bathed themselves, their horses and dogs, children and women in the water, in that order! The Ute Indians often set their winter hunting camps beneath the natural shelter offered by the bluffs enclosing Byers Canyon, which adjoins our property. In 1840 William Byers, for whom the canyon is named, became the first white man to discover the hot water at our little town, which he named Hot Sulphur Springs. Byers recognized the economic potential of the baths and the surrounding area. With the aid of the U.S. Cavalry and the courts, he acquired the land, somewhat deviously, from the Ute Tribe.

The resort has been continually operational for 140 years and in the 1920’s to 1950’s was one of the most popular hot springs resorts in the Rocky Mountain States. In 1997, after our extensive renovation, the Ute tribal spiritual leader blessed the waters at our opening ceremony that almost 1,000 people attended. The Ute Indians are welcome to use the springs once again. We are blessed by enjoying renewed recognition and attendance and are considered one of the best natural hot mineral springs resorts and spas in the country.

The mineral baths at Hot Sulphur Springs are a great place to spend a day.  It is nice kid friendly and a perfect place to relax after a day of skiing.

Here is a discount coupon for the mineral baths.  If you need transportation out to Hot Sulphur Springs be sure to call Curt at Valley Taxi.  They do run taxis out there and bring you back as well.

So, if you need a little relaxation in the Colorado Rockies look no further than the mineral baths in Hot Sulphur Springs.

United States Mountain Bike National Championships at Solvista

Solvista 2010 USA Mountain Bike Championships2010 US Mountain Bike Championships Winter Park

The United States Mountain Bike Championships are making a return to Solvista ski and golf club for the second year.  This a huge event for the Winter Park area and Solvista specifically, another feather in the cap for “Mountain Bike Capitol, USA”

SolVista Bike Park is proud to host the 2010 USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships in Granby, Colorado.  On July 15-18. 2010 thousands of professional and amateur races will come battle it out on world class terrain in Cross Country, Downhill, Super-D, Mountain Cross and Short Track races.

The four day event will be held on July 15th thru 18th, 2010.  It is a great way to see some spectacular athletes competing on some great terrain.  It also is a good week to bring up the n=bike and do some great riding and check out the event.

The resort will again host national championships for downhill, cross country and four cross events for elite, junior, master and amateur categories.

Sol Vista has huge potential. They’re going to tweak some things in the basin area this year. For example, they will re-do the cross country course, so you’ll be able to see more of it as your watching.

SolVista move the expo area over and open the main area up for teams and vendors. Hopefully, it’ll be even more of a festival like atmosphere than last year.

In an effort to reduce the contracting and administrative logistics involved in constantly moving the nationals, USAC has been moving toward a model in which hosts serve as venues for multiple years, though perhaps for different disciplines.

Hopefully, we will see SolVista hosting these championships in years to come. SolVist Bike Park is a great venue and the exposure it brings to the Winter park area for mountain biking is fantastic.

To keep up to date on the schedule for the Us Mountain Bike Championships got to www.solvistanationals.com for info.  As of April 2010 the info is still about the 2009 event.

For lodging to the USA Cycling Mountain Bike Championships check out Winter Park Lodging Company rentals.

Winter Park, CO Mexican Food

Mexican restaurants Winter Park CO

Mountain Rose Cafe

Winter Park breakfast restaurantWith the end of ski season coming upon us it seems that we have been eating out more than usual.  And maybe because it is now spring I have been having a hankerin’ for Mexican food and margaritas.  So in the last week or so we have eaten at Azteca in Winter Park, Lime in the Winter Park  Resort Village and Mountain Rose.  I thought I would give a run down of what I thought of these Mexican food serving establishments.  Mountain Rose serves lots of different types of food but when we were there I had a burrito and I will include that in this blog.

Aztecathis is one of our usual haunts and they serve up some great salsa and margaritas.  We usually order the espresso burrito (no idea why it’s called that) and it is always very tasty.  Azteca has two locations in the Winter Aprk area and we seem to always go the the one in the Kings Crossing building.

Lime – My wife had sworn off Lime the last time we went ther because of the cold in the building and the food. After skiing this week we decided to give it another chance and we were rewarded.  It seems Lime has figured out their heating issues and have inproved their kitchen.  I had a mix of three enchiladas (chicken, beef, cheese) and the wife had a bowl of black bean soup.  All  was very good as well as fantastic chips and salsa.  Carolina our server was very friendly and helpful.

Mountain Rose Cafe – This is a breakfast/lunch place that serves up a great chicken or breakfast burrito.  My wife tells me they have great baked goods and other items but I always get the breakfast or lunch burrito.

There is also Carlos and Maria’s in the Cooper Creek square that I have not been to in over a year.  From my memory they have decent food and some pretty good margaritas.  A couple of friends I ski with swear by Carlos and Maria’s as the best Mexican food in the Winter Park area.

So, ’tis spring and the time for tacos, burritos and margaritas!  Get on out and have a cold margarita in Winter Park, Colorado.

Mountain Biking in Winter Park CO 2010Winter Park Single Track Mountain Biking

Yes, as the logo says “Mountain Bike Capitol USA”.  That is our little towns claim to fame here in the Northern Central Rockies of Colorado and the time for mountain biking is coming upon us quickly.  Time to get the bike out make sure all the equipment is in order and give those pedals a few cranks.  It may even by time for a pair of new riding shorts and jersey.

After a very good ski season, I may be a little ahead of myself as we are still expecting some big snow storms here in WP, the bike has been calling my name every time I open the door to the garage.  Yes it will soon be mountain bike season here in Winter Park, Colorado and the time is now to prepare.

Check out the Fraser Valley/Winter  Park bike trail map for some great ideas to to some biking.  Looking for some recommendations?  Well here you go:

  1. Rendezvous Biking – up behind the Rendezvous home sits the old ski area of Idlewild.  There is great mountain biking here.  It is a kind of Northern California kind of terrain with rolling hills and water.  This is my favorite area to bike.  A map can be obtained from the Rendezvous sales office.
  2. Winter Park Resort Biking – Many, many trail at the resort.  My favorites are Ice Hill, Comanche , and Lower Cherokee.
  3. Tipperary Creek Loop – Varied terrain that all can enjoy from single track to some open road areas.

So, we are winding down the days of the ski season and the dreaded mud season will be gone in a flash, we hope, and then is the oh so glorious summer mountain biking season in Winter Park, CO.  Set your plans now and make a trip to Winter Park/Fraser to Mountain Bike Capitol USA.

Easter Fun at Winter Park Resort Colorado

Winter Park Easter BunnyEaster Bunny in Winter Park, Colorado

The Easter Bunny donned some skis this weekend and made an appearance in Winter Park, Colorado.  There was a few inches of new snow for Mr. Bunny and the wind calmed a bit for him to rip it up over on the Mary Jane side.

At the base of the Winter Park Resort was the Wells Fargo Easter Egg and Candy Hunt that was a hit with all the youngsters.  Nicholas & Willem, our twins, were able to get a couple of chocolate eggs themselves.  It was a great time for the young ones and this is an event we will make an annual tradition.

April skiing in Winter Park ColoradoSnow in April in Winter Park, Colorado

The snow just keeps on coming here in Winter Park.  In the last three days we have had almost ten inches of snow and there is more predicted for the next three days with this coming Tuesday looking like we will get hit pretty hard.

Here is the snow report for today the 4th day of April, 2010:

New Winter Park Resort Snow (In Inches)
24 hrs 48 hrs 72 hrs Season
2″ 3.5″ 9.5″ 251.

There are only two weeks left for this ski season and now is the time to get out and make some turns.  Check out the snow forecast at snow forecast.com and see all the snow we should be getting in these next two weeks.  This week Thursday and Friday should be spectacular days for some spring skiing.  With highs in the 40′s it will be a light jacket day with plenty of sunscreen needed.  Not a better way to spend a day on the slopes and an afternoon on the deck having a beer.

High pressure ridging aloft holds through next Thursday, weakening on Friday as a major storm brews out west. Another unsettled pattern which is kicked off by this system starts next Saturday (10th), and may continue off and on through the 16th/ 17th, maybe beyond, in the form of cut-off low pressure systems possibly. Pacific storms (with snow) should move through with good frequency into the last half of April.  Plan now to get the snow that these storms are going to dump

Come celebrate spring in the Rocky Mountains.  Winter Park Lodging Company is offering a fourth night free special and the best lift ticket deals around.  April is the best time to ski in Colorado so don’t miss out.  Head on up and spend a few dys on the slopes under the blue, blue Colorado skies.
