Winter Park/Faser Snow Tubing Hill

Fraser Sledding HillFraser sled and tubing hill

I have seen the slopes of the Fraser snow tubing hill many times on the way home from Winter Park to Tabernash.  There behind our own little monument to American fast food, KFC and Taco Bell, sits the Fraser Snow Tubing Hill.  The operation looks quite impressive with the slope lit in the evening and the tubes flying down.  A good friend has even said that it is very fun, almost scary how fast you fly down.

I have to say, though, we have never tried the sled hill out.  I had a hard time envisioning twin one year olds enjoying the rush down the hill.  So this year we will give a report on the experience with two year olds.  Sitting down to write this blog I did do a little research of review sites to see what people thought of the sled hill and they were mostly positive with some complaining about the waits for tubes.  Check out Yelps reviews for the Fraser snow tubing hill.

Here is their contact info from the Grand County Chamber of Commerce:

We will schlep the twins out to Fraser this winter and give the Fraser Sled Hill a try and I will write a first hand review of Grand Counties very own sled hill.  We will keep you posted.

Rudi’s Deli Specials to Celebrate Opening Week of Ski Season!

rudis2Maybe it’s just us in Winter Park, but we like to eat good, hot, homemade food, especially when it’s a chilling thirty below during the depths of winter (and we eat a little extra in the fall too, so we can pack on some winter fat to keep us warm…). One of our longtime favorites is Rudi’s Deli, located right in downtown Winter Park, because of the incredible homemade soups and hearty sandwiches. What’s best about this place, aside from the turkey avocado melt and the toasted reuben panini, are the cheap prices! (Remember, I’m a broke snowboard bum, so when I say cheap, I mean it).

Here’s the best part: Rudi’s Deli is going to be offering HALF OFF their ENTIRE MENU from ski season opening day, Nov. 18, through Thanksgiving day. Take advantage of that deal to try a couple new additions to the menu, including 3 new entree salads (Ahi, Greek, Chef’s, and Pasta salad with tomato, edamame, and feta), 3 new soups (stop in to find out!), and a new Ultimate veggie wrap. Don’t forget that Rudi’s also offers tasty burritos and bagels for breakfast, as well as coffee from the famed Rocky Mountain Roastery. New winter hours are 10 am to 8 pm every day. Check out the website for the complete menu!

Winter Park Rec Center

Winter Park Rec CenterWe had a chance to tour the soon to be finished Fraser Valley Rec Center this week and man are we impressed.  Scott gave us the grand tour and the place is just stunning.  Two pools, steam room, hot tub, dry sauna, climbing wall, basketball courts, deck level trampoline with foam ball landing: the place has almost everything.  Can’t wait ’till the place opens up.  Scott said that opening day will be December 18th and they will have a grand opening the weekend of January 23rd, 2010.

The district has finalized the fee structure minus some small tweaks.  The center will offer child minding services for $4.00 an hour per child.  What a bargain!

We here at Winter Park Lodging Company would like to say job well done to Scott and everyone who had anything to do with the new Rec Center.  Everyone at Winter Park Lodging Company will be spending lots of time unwinding there.  The Bradford twins, Nicholas & Willem, are sure to spend countless hours there and learn many sports.

Winter Park Resort Skiing

Snow on the Winter Park trees

What are your top five Colorado Ski Resorts?

I was doing some online searches about Winter Park Resort the other day and I came across an article by Ski Magazine in their Where Now column.  Pretty good article with some definite truths about skiing up here in Winter Park.  You can see the Ski Magazine article here.

Yes we here in Winter Park ski bumps, bumps and more bumps.  But when a 42 year olds knees have had enough we head for the hidden stashes of powder that are secreted all though the Winter Park and Mary Jane area.  If you know where to look there is almost always fresh powder.  See Buckaroo trees, the gladed out area in Vasquez Ridge that  is a definite locals only find even though it can be seen from one Winter Parks major lifts.

Great that Ski Magazine is doing a highlight of the skiing in Winter Park.  I have skied almost every one of Colorado’s ski resorts multiple times and Winter Park is definitely in the top three in terms of terrain and an enjoyable mountain to ski.  As I have said in past blogs if you are looking for disco bars, salt water taffy stores and fur coat retailers you are going to be disappointed.  But if you like to ski and I mean ski then there is maybe one or two resorts in Colorado that are in the same category as Winter Park/Mary Jane.  The bumps here in Winter Park as the Ski Magazine article states are the best in USA. The powder and amount of snowfall here is the most of all Colorado destination resorts.  If you want to get lost and not see many people that is a cinch over at Mary Jane.

Anywho, I will stop beating the proverbial Winter Park chest.  So lets have a bit of discussion and see what Y’all’s five favorite Colorado resorts are to ski.  Here are my top five.

  1. Winter Park  Ski Resort
  2. Telluride Ski Resort
  3. Steamboat Springs Ski Resort
  4. Aspen Snowmass
  5. Crested Butte Mountain Resort

Put your top five Colorado Ski Resorts in the comments below and we will do a random drawing for a free dinner at Winter Park Villages own Cheeky Monk.  Lets say the contest will end in December 1st, 2009.  Drawing will soon follow.
