The weekend of August 14-16 is one of the biggest during the summer in the Fraser Valley and Winter Park. The towns host the Annual Salute to American Veterans Rally where thousands of veterans, bikers, and patriots gather together to honor America’s fallen heroes.  It is the largest and longest running Veteran/ Motorcycle event in the Western US. wall

The Vietnam Veterans Traveling Memorial Wall will be displayed August 13-16 in Fraser at the ball fields. The wall is a 3/5 replica of the Vietnam War Memorial Wall located in Washington, D.C.  It is 6 feet tall at the center and over 300 feet long. It proudly holds the names of those men and women lost in Vietnam. There is no charge to view the wall.

Also taking place at the Fraser ball fields will be the Remembrance Ceremony.  Speaking at the ceremony will be Vietnam Veteran and United States Air Force ACE Fighter Pilot Brigadier General Steve Ritchie.  As a pilot, Ritchie flew 339 missions for over 800 flying hours in his F-4 Phantom fighter. Ritchie returned home after his second tour to become the only ACE pilot of the Vietnam War. Performing the national anthem, as well as other patriotic favorites, will be Harmony in Motion, a United States Army singing group.

Other events taking place Saturday morning in Winter Park are the Veterans Parade where all 4 military branches will be represented. There will be air support from both civilian and military sectors.

Another big highlight of the weekend is the POW/MIA Recognition Ride. The ride started in 1987 when a few people rode their motorcycles through Colorado Springs with POW/MIA flags waving in an effort to raise awareness for those lost in battle. In the last 22 years the event has grown to include thousands of bikers, both vets and civilians, who still show their support for the POW’s  and those who are MIA. The ride begins in Granby and ends in Winter Park. What a site to see.

harley-davidson2Show your INK!! The 14th annual High Altitude Tattoo Competition will be held on Sunday afternoon at the Pub in downtown Winter Park. Great prizes will be given out for the best ink. Also, to be noted, the Pub offers VIP bike parking out front!

Music is also a big part of the weekend.  Many homegrown Colorado bands will be performing  in Hideaway Park throughout the weekend.  You’ll enjoy everything from rock-a billy  and blues to good old fashioned rock and roll.  All daytime music shows  and events are free.  Be sure to check out the Brethren Boys at the Pub in downtown Winter Park for an extra show on Saturday night.

Goody’s | Creperie and Ice Cream in the Village at Winter Park

The Village at Winter Park has a third restaurant finally and this one will be great for the morning skiers passing by. It’s a creperie (breakfast place) with ice cream too. We stopped in for ice cream last week and were impressed with the digs.
They are still getting the kinks worked out (they never charged us – fine by us!) but it looks to be a much needed venue for morning breakfast on a cold morning. We’ll post more of the menu tomorrow.  Everything looks priced right except for the ice cream. $3.00 for one scoop and it wasn’t generous. They either need to make it look like a giant scoop or lower the price.

Deals for Alpine Slide & Winter Park Resort Summer Activities

alpine slide

One of the biggest draws to Winter Park in the summer is the exciting Alpine Slide at Winter Park Resort, the longest in the state of Colorado. For those who aren’t familiar with it, it is like going down a long water slide, nix the water and plus a speed-controlled cart (see photo).  There are a bunch of other fun summer activities at Winter Park Resort, including mini golf, a maze, scenic chairlift rides, the leaps & bounds bungee (trampoline with bungee cords) and more.  It is always a fun day filled with tons of cool activities at the resort in the summer.

You can get a sweet deal for all-day activity passes for Winter Park Resort at any Front Range King Soopers, at the Breeze Ski Rental store in Dumont (on I-70 before Winter Park exit), or at any location where there is a Livewire Ticket Kiosk. Instead of paying the regular price of $49 for adults or $45 for kids, you can get an all-day pass for $39 or a family four pack for $129.  The normal cost to go down the alpine slide just once is $15, so this is a huge deal.

The summer activities at Winter Park Resort are open from 10am – 5pm daily until September 7th, then on Fridays – Sundays until September 27th.  Take a day or two to come to Winter Park for the resort activities and all of the other fun things to do in the area.

Geocache Winter Park

gpsIf you have no idea what geocaching is, read on.  According to wikipedia:  “Geocaching is an outdoor activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called “geocaches” or “caches”) anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container (usually a tupperware or ammo box) containing a logbook. Larger containers can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets of little value. Geocaching is most often described as a “game of high-tech hide and seek”, sharing many aspects with orienteering, treasure-hunting, and waymarking.  Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antarctica.[1] There are over 820,000 active geocaches in the world right now.”

Turns out that Winter Park Resort has over 3 dozen geocache stashes on the mountain just waiting for you to find. A free geocaching class meets in the new village  every Saturday at 10am. You can bring your own GPS or rent one for $10/day.  Choose the level of difficulty for your search, easy green to double black diamond.  For more information contact the resort at 970.726.1564.

Make Your Own Music at Winter Park Resort

Make Your Own Music at the Resort

As you walk thru the Village at Winter Park Resort this summer, you’ll most likely hear the faint music from these pedestrian chimes.   Our two year old twins loved trying them out as did the adults.  There are a bunch near Starbucks and Lime and then another set further down the road towards the Cabriolet.

Get your inner musician going!

Try out Winter Parks Best Hot Dog at the Cosmic Dog!

snb136141Located in downtown Winter Park next to the Gausthaus Eichler, the Cosmic Dog is a delicious and affordable new addition to your summertime lunch options. The bright colored vendor stand  specializes in a variety of hot dogs (beef, pork, chicken and veggie) that are first steamed and then put on the grill for that yummy finishing touch. Being ladies who can appreciate a quality hot dog, Amy and I went to check it out the other day. We both went with the “meal deal” which includes your choice of dog, side, snb13613and drink for $6.50.  As the beef franks went on the grill, we chose our sides from three options of chips, curry potato salad or homemade coleslaw. Last but not least was my personal favorite, the lengthy condoment station stocked with an array of peppers, onions, slaw, sauces and more. Topped off with an ice cold soda, we enjoyed our meal in the sun, at one of the picnic tables provided. Fernand, the owner of Cosmic Dog (see above) was very gracious and also gives out punch cards that will get you a free dog after purchasing five.
