Carver’s Bakery – good for breakfast or lunch

Good place for breakfast or lunch
Good place for breakfast or lunch

We were headed to ski today but it was pouring snow and windy, so we bailed and headed to Carver’s for lunch. They don’t have dinner anymore, so lunch or breakfast is all we can get.  Thing I love the most? You can have breakfast at 1pm.  And the BEST thing on the menu?  Benedict Arnold.  Eggs benedict with avacado and hashbrowns.  To lessen the guilt, I got the small portion so there was only one egg/biscuit.  And under $7.

Chris had the Gyro. Not as good but not bad.
It’s behind Cooper Creek Shopping center. In the summer, you can sit outside in their back patio – really nice. We’ll take a photo of that in July and post again.
Try it out!

I was standing in line yesterday at The Zephyr Mountain Lodge to get a key reprogrammed for our condo there and I overheard a guest asking about night skiing here in the Fraser Valley.  Aaaha, another subject for the Winter Park Lodging by Owner blog.  SolVista Basin is open for night skiing and tubing on select Saturday evenings this winter from 5pm-8pm.  Cost for night skiing is $10 per person, tubing is $10 per person or a combo ticket for $15 per person. Season pass holders at SolVista can night ski or tube for free. Scheduled night skiing and tubing dates include: Dec. 26, 27, 28, Jan. 2, 3, 17, 31, Feb. 14, 28, Mar. 14, 28.   So there is one date left for the 2008/2009 ski season and that is March 28th.  Information can be found by calling 888-283-7458.

Only one night of night skiing left here in Grand County so get your last turns in for the year!

winter-park-spring-splash-2008April is coming! The fun starts this time of year in Winter Park, for locals and visitors alike, but especially for us locals (if you’ve ever lived in a ski town, you’ll know exactly what I mean).

Everyone is up for celebrating and hitting the slopes a few more times in the sunshine before the close of the season and the beginning of spring (and eventually, summer!).

The snow gets nice & soft in the afternoons and it’s usually warm enough to shed a few layers from your normal skiing attire. We like to take a few runs in the sun, hit the decks of the Derailer or the Club Car to soak up the rays and down a refreshing drink, then repeat.

Here’s a rundown of some events happening in Winter Park this April:

  • April 4th & 5thWeekend Party at the Park - Good drink specials and live music at the Derailer Bar, smashing deals at the end-of-season blowout in base area shops and free bump tips from the Winter Park Ski and Snowboard school (at top of the Prospector Lift at 1pm).  Plus, watch the area’s best freeride competitors in rail jam competitions and demo’s.
  • April 11th & 12th – Family Weekend - fun for children of all ages with free fun carnival atmosphere including stilt walkers, jugglers, face painters, caricature artists and live music. The Derailer Bar offers up great food and drink specials for aprés ski. The end-of-season sales continue and so do the free bump and tele tips from the Winter Park Ski and Ride School (at top of the Prospector Lift at 1pm).
  • April 18th & 19thWeekend Throw-back to the 80′s – Dust off your finest day-glow apparel, straight skinny skis and old school one-pieces. Win valuable prizes in the “Dress Your Dog Hot” contest and old school costume contest, both at the Plaza at 1pm. • April 19th – Closing Day and Spring Splash Party! -  Watch skiers and riders struggle through obstacles on the Larry Sale trail race course and attempt to skim across an icy pond to reach the finish line and post a time. Live music sets the tone for a closing day party that is totally entertaining and fun. For more details, call 970.726.1564. Want to register? Health Recommendations to Avoid Adverse Effects of Altitude – by Dr. Mark Allen, M.D.

My brother, Dr. Mark Allen, thorasic surgeon at a well known hospital in the country that shall not be named did this write up below for us (and you) to help you avoid and treat altitude sickness as well as deal with the “We’re not in Kansas anymore” conditions of the Rocky Mountains. Be sure to read before you arrive so you can avoid what several experience and in turn miss out on sweet ski days.

From Dr. Mark Allen, M.D.:

Here’s our health recommendations to help avoid the adverse effects on your body and get the most out of your time here:

1) Break Out Those Shades
Shades or sunglasses are not just for looking cool in the mountains. Sunglasses actually offer very important protection for your eyes from the damaging UV radiation. The UV radiation in the mountains is 36% higher than found at sea level. Wear your shades to protect your eyes from the glaring sun as it reflects off the snow. And don’t forget, goggles can offer the same type of protection even though you think they might not look as cool.

2) Dry Climate = Dry Skin
When you come to Colorado, you’ll notice that your skin may seem drier than at home. The high altitude sun and low humidity are to blame. Be sure to bring lotion and lip balm for a more comfortable and itch free vacation.

3) Block the Sun
Along with the high altitude comes intense sun beams and those damaging UV rays. Be sure to use sunscreen lavishly and we recommend 30 SPF. Re-apply often.

4) Water is Your Friend
Be sure to drink a lot of water when you are at our high altitude. If you don’t drink enough water, you may bring on a headache which is associated with altitude sickness. By drinking lots of water, even though you may not be thirsty, you will push that headache away. Make sure that you do not drink alcohol instead of water, as alcohol can also bring on altitude sickness. Remember, water is your friend.

5) Eat Right
It is important to eat to avoid altitude sickness and that means consuming complex carbs. Complex carbs actually require less oxygen to metabolize and help you burn off a better ratio of oxygen to carbon dioxide, allowing you to use oxygen more efficiently. Plus carbohydrates will help maintain your energy level and the protein will help rebuild muscle. You’ll appreciate that plate of pasta a little bit more the next day on the mountain.

6) Dress Smart
Bring layers of clothing as the temperatures will vary greatly from morning to evening and from day to day in Winter Park. It’s not unusual to have a cool morning of 35 degrees and later in the day have it warm up to 80 degrees. A lightweight coat, sweater, and t-shirts are all a must. Long pants and shorts will serve you well to have some of each.
We all enjoy that tremendous view from a high summits and skiing down from them, but there are risks in going to high altitude, and it’s important to understand these risks.

7) Beware of high altitude sickness

Here is a classic scenario for developing a high altitude illness. You fly from New York City to Denver at 5,000 feet (1,525 meters). That afternoon you rent a car and drive up to Winter Park at 9,120 feet (2,780 meters). You go out to dinner have 3 or 4 drinks, go to bed, wake up early and hop on the chairlift and go up to the top of the Panoramic Express Chair lift at 12,060 feet (3,676 meters) ski all day, and have a few beers after your done skiing.  You begin to have a severe headache and feel nauseous and weak. If your condition worsens, you may begin to have difficulty skiing. Scenarios like this are not uncommon, so it’s essential that you understand the physiological effects of high altitude.
