We checked out the brand new restaurant on Main Street in Granby, and boy, oh boy, all I could think was “you’re not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy”.

You feel like you stepped out of Granby and into downtown Denver as soon as you go through the front door. Dino Kaplanis, the chef, and his wife, Amy,  have certainly created an inviting dinner spot with relaxing atmosphere, delicious food, and an affordable wine list.

Located in what was once the home furnishings store, you are instantly welcomed when you walk through the door. The fantastic fireplace surrounded by comfy chairs is a great spot to enjoy a cocktail before or after dinner. The friendly staff ushers you in with such warmth that everyone feels like a local.

The menu focuses mainly on Greek dishes and dishes with a Mediterranean twist. We sampled a   few different entrees and enjoyed them all. The baby lamb chops, served in a smaller portion, were tender and juicy. The perfect size serving  to

enjoy with the fresh Greek salad. Yia Yia’s Pasta with red sauce was a yummy blend of Mediterranean flavors, and the serving  was so large we took some home.  But it was the Chicken Milanese that stole the show. It was sooooo tender and served with a duo of sauces that complimented each other and the chicken perfectly. I don’t have to tell you that there were no leftovers on my plate, even though the portion was quite healthy. We finished off the meal with Loukamathis, Greek donut holes. They were just the right amount of sweet and fluffy goodness to go with our Ouzo shots. Dino joined us for a toast and wanted to make sure I told everyone “The Ouzo flows freely here!”

They are open every day for lunch, 11-2. Dinner hours are Monday through Thursday, 5-9, and Friday and Saturday, 5-10.  I’m also looking forward to brunch on Sunday, 10-2. They have an omelet bar, my favorite! Make sure to check it out, because it’s worth the drive “all the way to Granby”!

  1. Chris and I tried out Brickhouse 40 after Amy’s good review. What a great new place for Granby. It is classy, well decorated, and good food. Dino, the owner, greeted us right after we sat down. We had calamari to start (I didn’t love it but Chris did) and then I had sliders and Chris had Chicken Marsala. One of the sliders was grilled tuna and it was dry but Dino happily and quickly replaced it with another couple crabmeat sliders – delicious! He explained they use fresh crabmeat which makes them so good.

A few things we learned from Dino:
    - You can get a pizza (they looked good, didn’t try one) for about $9.00 so it’s a good option for a family on a budget
    - He has a 2 and 4 year old so he’s designed a child’s “activity menu” where they bring new things for the kids to do every 15 minute – so cool! We’ll be trying that in a year. This time, we left Nicholas and Willem at home with the sitter.

Definitely try it out – worth the drive. Doesn’t break the bank.

  2. I took “the wife” Here for her birthday. I can’t say enough good things about our experience!!!! I live in the denver area and stay in winter park when up for the weekends. this place is better then anything close to the mountain. take the drive!! as said above Dino is a great owner and manager! you won’t easily forget your dinner. -thanks goes to Dino and the great wait staff.

  4. Never, ever, ever again. The worst customer service we ever, ever had. Pizza 60 minutes late, burned! Management unapologetic and rude.

Sorry, but when the management whips the pizza away, in a huffy mood, how can I not write something terrible about the restaurant. Wait staff tried to make it better, but it’s the management that sets the mood! 4 thumbs down! Cold too!

  5. Me and a buddy visited Brickhouse 40 this past Saturday evening after having been referred by somebody in town. I must tell you that we stopped in with very low expectations having spent a great day in the Winter Park area. However, even with low expectations I was extremely let down by everything that was Brickhouse 40! The service was poor, the product was substandard and it was grossly overpriced.

We did not have a reservation (didn’t know that there was a place in town that you needed one). Was no big deal. So we waited for about 30 minutes to be seated, but headed to the bar area to have a drink. Around 40 minutes later we were seated, still no big deal. We weren’t in a hurry and just wanted to relax and have a nice steak. We arrived at our table and sat and sat and sat until eventually a gentleman came to our table to inform us that he would be with us “shortly.” So we sat some more. He eventually did come over to our table and ask if we would like a drink. We said yes. Then he disappeared again. Some time passed and he did finally deliver two more drinks and then walked away. So we waited for a little while longer for him to come back.

He eventually did return, and started to tell us about the “special of the day” it turned out to be not so special. So, I asked about the special and then followed that with “we would like to start with some appetizers” and asked for a recommendation. He basically rattled off that he would suggest well….. everything on the menu. Not much really looked appealing but we settled on some feta bread dish for $6.99. I only give the price because it was smaller than a single piece of toast. I thought that he was kidding. It was dry and tasteless. But oh well. So then a women stopped by and asked us if we had ordered a salad. I said…. “No” and then it occurred to me that I had absolutely no idea what would accompany my entree.

AND THEN our steaks came……. They were horrific! We ordered Prime Rib and I have to tell you that I can make it better at home in my own oven and could have saved $25.99. And if the steak wasn’t bad enough, the potatoes tasted like they came from a box and I have to say that the portion of vegetables that they served was the smallest I had ever seen. If I was the proprietor of this establishment I would have been embarrassed. Oh, I almost forgot, we order a “crab cake” to go with our meal. It was honestly the smallest, driest hockey puck that I have ever been served, EVER!

At this point, I am livid. Between the servers infrequent visits to our table, and the absolute worst dining experience I have ever had I was left speechless. So, out of curiosity i stopped by the hostess stand to ask a simple question. There was a very courteous young lady standing there, so I asked her “how long have you been open?” Because I was thinking that the place was relatively new and that perhaps they just needed to work out the bugs. She promptly replied that they had been open for just over a year….. and smiled. I said to her that I was surprised that they had been around for that long. When she without solicitation responded with……. “Oh my, how BAD was it?” She had apparently heard unfavorable things before, I am sure fairly regularly so this came as no surprise to her.

There are so many other issues that I could talk about, but long story short: I don’t think that this place will be around long enough to celebrate their second anniversary…….

  6. We had a SUPER time at the Brickhouse 40! We couldn’t have asked for anything better on our vacation. We came in for lunch and wanted to sit by a fire because I was cold and they made one for us! Our server recommended the Gyros and it was the best I’ve ever had. She was so nice to us both and just made our day. She gave us directions around town and made us feel welcome.

Can’t say enough how much we enjoyed our stay at the Brickhouse 40!

  7. Had dinner their last night and found everything fine and reasonable service. My only complaint is why the overpriced wine; a personal pet peeve of mine.

Why should a very small pour of wine cost $9.00 when the bottle sells for $12.00 at Apple Jacks ?
