Even in Winter, We’re Green

we-are-greeen-here-at-winter-parkWinter Park was one of only three Colorado ski resorts featured in an article on www.onthesnow.com about resorts that are making strong efforts to reduce their energy expenditures and their impact on the environment.

All of Winter Park Resort’s new chairlifts, including the Eagle Wind and the six-pack Super Gauge, as well as all future chairlifts, are powered with renewable energy through the purchase of sustainable wind-energy credits.

As part of their new Connexion program, there is also improved education for staff and guests on renewable energy, the use of biodegradable resources for single-use items and an improved recycling program. For more details, see the in-depth press release directly from Winter Park Resort. Here’s to being green!

Monthly Recipe: Molten Chocolate Mousse Cake

The small staff of Winter Park Lodging by Owner gathered together in December for a fun Christmas/Winter Kick-off Party at owners Chris and Sarah Bradford’s home.  We all partook in the great food, wine and laughter for the holidays.

After the delicious meal prepared by Chris and the elephant gift exchange, we were treated with this delicious Molten Chocolate Mouse Cake by Sarah – and I warn you – it could be addictive it’s so good.  Hope you get a chance to try it out this winter!

The brand-new, outdoor ice skating rink is now open at the new Winter Park Base Village, just in time for the New Year.

It’s a fun activity for the family after the young ‘uns have tired of skiing. Plus, there’s no need to leave the base. Enjoy hot cocoa, take a photo with the Winter Park Bear, watch the skiers come down the mountain, and let the kids skoot and skate away. There’s even a Zamboni that comes out in the afternoon to smooth out the ice!

There’s no charge to use the rink, but you’ll have to rent ice skates if you don’t have your own. You can rent skates at Winter Park Resort Rentals right across from the Zephyr Mountain Lodge.

You can also get your skate on at the covered rink at Cooper Creek Square in downtown Winter Park at Snow Mountain Ranch next to their sledding and tubing hill, or at Devil’s Thumb Ranch.

Exploring on Snowshoes

snow-covered-treesMany who have never tried out snowshoes think it sounds like a difficult activity. Truth is, it’s really very easy and fun! It’s just like hiking, except with snow- and gravity-defying paddles on your feet.

Every other Saturday starting January 10th, the Winter Park and Fraser Valley Chamber of Commerce sponsors free beginner snowshoe tours with snowshoes provided. The tour takes place on a flat, easy trail edging the Fraser River, where you can enjoy the serenity of the forest and even spot an occasional moose. Call 970-726-4118 or 800-903-7275 or stop by the Visitor Center in downtown Winter Park to sign up!

If you want to go at it on your own, check out our trail recommendationsin the area. The summertime trails usually make for great snowshoeing trails as well!
